Right now, the 32-time Grammy winner and Texas native is all the talk of country music.

“Texas Hold ‘Em” has already been a massive hit, becoming Beyoncé’s first #1 hit in country music when it debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. This is the first time a Black female artist has debuted at #1 on that chart.

Queen Bey has always repped her country roots, from her performances in the past with artists like Sugarland and the Chicks to her rodeo appearances, and her western aesthetics in her Ivy Park clothing line. She has been dropping country themes since the launch of Renaissance in 2021. Most notable of these has been the recurring appearance of her mirrored cowboy hat which she has embraced on several occasions.

Beyoncé Shakes the Country Music World

There’s been such a strong reaction to the song, both positively and negatively. There has been a massive debate about just how country the song is, with some country music radio stations even refusing to play the song. Well, the Queen of Country has spoken and Beyoncé has her seal of approval. In an Instagram post, Dolly Parton congratulated the pop star on her #1 country hit.

“I’m a big fan of Beyoncé and very excited that she’s done a country album.

“So congratulations on your Billboard Hot Country number one single. Can’t wait to hear the full album!” She shared on social media.

Grand Ole Opry also shared Dolly’s post and said they were excited to welcome Beyoncé to the Opry someday.

This did not go down well with country fans who dropped negative comments on both Dolly Parton’s and Grand Ole Opry’s posts. The critics have an issue with Beyoncé venturing into the country music genre and are saying her songs aren't country enough.

One of the comments on Instagram read:

“Beyonce has nothing and will never have anything to do with country music. Dying your hair and wearing a belt buckle doesn’t make you country. Introducing her at the Opry would be an insult to everyone within the Opry.”

While the debate continues, some have risen to her defense. Among them is her mother, Tina Knowles. She noted that Black musicians have always helped shape country music.

“When people ask why is Beyonce wearing cowboy hats? It’s really funny, I laugh because it’s been there since she was a kid, we went to rodeos every year and my whole family dressed in Western fashion. It definitely was a part of our culture growing up,” she wrote on Instagram.

Source: Instagram | Beyonce

Read also:

Do Blacks Have a Claim to Country Music?

Beyoncé’s new songs have reignited discussions about diversity and representation within the country music scene.

The controversy has mostly been about her “countryness,” and whether a pop star can cross from one genre to the next. Well, the singer isn’t the first to cross over into the genre as numerous other non-country artists have done so in the past, but it didn’t cause the same stir as Beyoncé’s has. The likes of Kenny Rogers and Conway Twitty were into other genres before crossing over to country music. Why is Beyoncé causing so much stir? Could it be because of her skin color?

Some have long stereotyped country music as being White. But from the start, the genre has been influenced by Black musical styles and performances. Country music has African roots. It is a genre founded, molded, and upheld by the Black community. Starting from the Banjo, an instrument within the lineage of the West African lute, Africans sparked the creation of the genre. How is it that country music has a multifaceted history deeply intertwined with the experiences of Black musicians and communities, and yet is associated with White people?

With Beyoncé's foray into country music, the genre might finally break free from the stereotypes. Her bold move can be seen as a reclamation of the genre, bringing country music back to its Black roots. It will also highlight Black contributions to the genre, challenging the idea that country music is solely White and also opening doors for more Black artists in the genre.

Over on X, formerly Twitter, radio personality Bobby Bones addressed the "historical" reason why Beyoncé and other Black artists have a claim to country music.

"So let’s get historical. Country music is based on the music from Africa brought over on the slave ships. And from Europe. With the fiddle and banjo. So all these dudes yelling 'that ain't country'... unless you're European or African, you ain't really 'country.' As far as music goes."

Are There Any Black Artists in Country Music?

From its earliest days to the present times, Black artists have played a key role in shaping country music. Yet, they have been marginalized in that sphere and their contributions have often been overlooked. Yes, there are Black artists in country music. Just because you don't know about them, doesn't mean they don't exist.

The late Charley Pride, penetrated this genre, breaking racial barriers with his remarkable talent and warm baritone that captivated audiences. For well over 50 years, he was the only Black artist significantly represented in the country music industry. He was an inspiration to generations of performers, opening doors for other Black artists. A 2020 recipient of the Country Music Association’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, Pride shattered stereotypes about who could be a country music star.

Darius Rucker (former lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish) is another Black artist who's broken through into country successfully. He has an incredible career as a country singer with at least eight #1 hits on the country airplay chart. He is also a three-time GRAMMY winner.

Despite the marginalization, the likes of Mickey Guyton, Kane Brown, Jimmie Allen, Brittney Spencer, and Willie Jones are currently conquering this genre.

Many see Beyoncé's move as a positive step towards inclusivity in country music. Some believe it could pave the way for more Black artists to explore the genre.

Will Beyoncé's venture into this genre spark a lasting shift in country music? Only time will tell. One thing that we know is that it has reignited discussions about diversity and representation within the country music scene. Maybe at some point things will change for the better and country music will become a bit more friendly to people of color.

Read also:

Yet, her story intertwines deeply with the Philadelphia Orchestra, revealing a complex narrative of artistic excellence overshadowed by racial prejudice. This is a tale of resilience, artistic defiance, and the eventual triumph of a remarkable artist.

Denied Opportunity, Embraced Europe:

Born in Philadelphia in 1897, Anderson's exceptional talent was evident early on. However, the shadow of racial segregation loomed large. She was denied admission to the Philadelphia Musical Academy, a stark reminder of the systemic barriers Black artists faced.

Undeterred, Anderson found a path forward in Europe. There, her talent was recognized, and she established a flourishing career. In 1925, she became the first Black American to perform with the New York Philharmonic, a testament to her undeniable artistry.

A City Divided: The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Incident

Anderson's return to the United States in 1939 was met with a national controversy. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused to allow her to perform at Constitution Hall, a venue they owned. This incident ignited a national outcry, highlighting the deeply ingrained racism in American society.

Image Source: Flickr | University of Pennsylvania

Read also:

Mrs. Roosevelt and the Lincoln Memorial Steps:

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, a staunch advocate for racial equality, intervened. She arranged for Anderson to perform a free concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday, 1939. An estimated 75,000 people attended, with millions more listening on the radio. This decisive moment transcended a mere concert; it became a symbolic victory for the Civil Rights Movement.

A Philadelphia Connection: Collaboration and Recognition

While the DAR incident cast a shadow, Anderson's relationship with the Philadelphia Orchestra wasn't solely defined by this event. Interestingly, she had a history of successful collaborations with the orchestra, performing twelve times between 1937 and 1957.

One notable collaboration was with conductor Eugene Ormandy. Organist Alan Morrison, Curtis Institute of Music Organ Department Chairperson, will perform on a classic 1927 Möller organ. Featured vocalists will be from the Marian Anderson Society Scholars program -- Jillian Patricia Pirtle, Laurice Kennel, and Brenton Mattox. In a historic moment in front of the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, contralto Anderson performed one of African-American classical composer Price’s version of “My Soul Is Anchored in the Lord.” The spiritual was one of Price’s most evocative songs. That year, Anderson was prevented from singing at Washington’s DAR Constitution Hall due to her race; it prompted the Lincoln Memorial concert. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt helped make the Lincoln Memorial show happen in a defiant effort against racial injustice. The performance on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939, was attended by 75,000 people, while many listened to a live radio broadcast. It was a defining moment. Alan Morrison and guest vocalists will pay tribute to the momentous occasion as part of the Philadelphia Organ Festival presented by Partners for Sacred Places; the festival is scheduled citywide, from March 15 to March 22, 2024. The Marian Anderson tribute is $10 to $30, from 7 p.m. EST to 9 p.m. EST. As a strong player in the abolitionist movement, Mother Bethel Church was a strong institution supporting individuals and groups in the fight for freedom and equality.

Many of such groups were the members of the free Black community, Northern abolitionists, and philanthropists who played active roles in the Underground Railroad movement which was a system existing in many of the Northern states before the Civil War which offered help to escaping slaves from the South by providing them refuge and safety in places where the hands of slave hunters could never reach.

With its growing strength as a wholly Black-owned church, Mother Bethel provided financial support, nourishment, and asylum to the escaping slaves of the Underground Railroad movement. After the emancipation proclamation by President Lincoln in 1863, Mother Bethel church was instrumental in settling many former slaves who had started relocating to Philadelphia.

Beyond offering sanctuary to fleeing slaves, Mother Bethel Church was a strong force in the abolitionist and civil rights movements. As an institution, it was not a new player in the movement. A victim of segregation, its founder Richard Allen had been a member of the St George’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia.

Statue of founder Richard Allen in front of Mother Bethel AME Church. Michael Clemmons via Wikimedia Commons

Read also:

Because of his growing influence especially among Blacks, St George saw a rise in the attendance of Black members to its church programs. Fearing that Black members would outnumber White members, race prejudices began to rise leading the church leadership to initiate segregation policies that forced Richard Allen and other black members of the church to leave. Their departure gave birth to the Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

As an advocate in the abolitionist movement, the church organized programs, meetings, rallies, and protests that highlighted the ills of slavery and pushed for its complete eradication. One such event where the Church played a crucial role as host was the 1817 meeting of 3000 African Americans who rose against the American Colonization Society which tried to relocate and resettle free Blacks in the United States to Sierra Leone.

Despite the numerous threats and harassment especially from slave hunters and those opposed to the abolitionist movement, members of Mother Bethel church remained committed to the cause of ending slavery and winning freedom for the many Black lives under the heel of servitude.

Furthermore, the church committed itself to opening up the minds of African Americans by running literacy programs and building schools to ensure that members of the Black community were prepared to function in society.

In the civil rights movement, the church hosted many Black leaders of the movement such as Frederick Douglass, Lucretia Mott, and Martin Luther King. Offering them access to their platform, these leaders were able to reach a wider audience and impact greatly in civil rights advocacy.

In the struggle of African Americans against slavery and wanton human rights violations, Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) would always hold a place in history, a solid rock whose involvement contributed immensely to the triumph of freedom.

Read also:

Born in Liberia and thrust into the throes of civil unrest at a young age, Justina and her family fled their homeland due to the civil war. They sought refuge first in Côte d’Ivoire, then Sierra Leone, before settling in the United States in 1994. This migration began a new chapter in her life that would see her evolve from a refugee to a beacon of hope and spiritual leadership within the Lutheran Church.

From a young age, Justina felt a divine calling to pastoral ministry, inspired by her father. Her faith was nurtured by her parents, Justin Knuckles Sr. and Rosamond Knuckles, who were actively involved in their church back in Liberia. Despite the upheaval caused by the war, her faith and commitment to the church remained steadfast, a constant thread that guided her through the challenges of resettlement in America. She became deeply involved in the Peoples’ Community Lutheran Church in Baltimore, a congregation founded by Liberian refugees (including her father, who was a founding member.) It quickly became a home away from home for many, including Justina and her family.

However, Justina’s path to pastoral ministry had doubts and challenges. At one point, despite her deep-seated calling, she decided against pursuing seminary education, content with serving as a lay leader. This decision stood until a profound spiritual experience at a conference, where a scripture from Ecclesiastes 5:4, “When you make a vow to God, do not forget to fulfill it,” resonated with her, reigniting her resolve to fulfill her calling.

Another profound moment in her journey happened during a trip to Wittenberg, Germany for the International Women’s Seminar during the 501 Reformation celebration in 2018. Walking in the footsteps of Martin Luther, standing before the door he nailed his 95 Theses, and hearing the stories of Women of the Reformation, Justina made the decision to enroll in seminary, trusting that God would make a way. On the morning of the Reformation celebration at Castle Church, Justina experienced God’s peace and presence, affirming her decision.

Justina’s journey to becoming a pastor was also shaped by her personal circumstances, notably being a single mother to four daughters. The logistical and financial challenges of seminary education loomed large. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic provided an unexpected opportunity for her to undertake her studies online, allowing her to balance her family responsibilities with her academic pursuits.

Her faith and commitment were further tested yet strengthened by a return visit to Liberia for an International African Lutheran Conference held by the African National Ministries of the ELCA. This trip, her first since fleeing the country as a child thirty years ago, was a deeply transformative experience; it allowed her to reconnect with her roots and serve as a bridge between her congregation in America and the African Lutheran community.

Justina’s story culminates in her ordination on Reformation Sunday and subsequent appointment as pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Laurel, MD, a role confirmed through the congregation's unanimous vote. This achievement is a personal triumph and a historic moment, as she became the second Liberian female ordained in the ELCA. The history she shares with Rev. Agnes Bryant Gbardoe, pastor of Elect Saints Lutheran Church, New Jersey, who is the first woman to hold such a position.

Through her narrative, Justina embodies the essence of perseverance, faith, and leadership. Her journey from a war-torn Liberia to pastoral leadership in the United States is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of faith. It underscores the importance of trusting in God’s plan, even in the face of adversity. It highlights one individual’s impact on a community, bridging cultures and fostering hope and resilience among those facing similar trials. Justina’s story is her own beacon of light for others, demonstrating that faith, perseverance, and community support can overcome the greatest obstacles.

A Momentous Celebration

Justina celebrated her birthday and graduation, a convergence of milestones that underscored the joy and gratitude of the occasion. She graduated from United Lutheran Seminary with her Master of Divinity and received the Buechner Excellence in Preaching Award. She said, “This award is a reminder that it is God who qualifies the call,” remembering the doubts, negative thoughts, and voices in her head telling her she was not good enough to be a pastor. Dancing to the song “Finally, It’s Happening to Me” by Liberian artist Candy Adams, Justina celebrated the achievements of the day and the fulfillment of God’s promises in her life. This celebration was hers and shared with her parents, children, extended family, and friends, who witnessed the culmination of her hard work, faith, and trust in God.

The Ordination

The ordination of The Rev. Justina Knuckles Sergeon was more than a ceremonial occasion; it was a profound moment of spiritual surrender and overwhelming peace amidst the whirlwind of life’s demands and personal struggles. Justina grappled with various responsibilities and challenges in the weeks leading up to this pivotal day. Illness impacted her, not once but twice; it added to the pressure of finalizing the ordination preparations.

Yet, in this crucible of stress and fatigue, a transformation occurred. Justina spoke of kneeling during her ordination, as the Bishop laid hands on her, and the song “Order My Steps in Your Word” was sung by Fargeleh Slober. This was a symbolic gesture of surrender; she felt like every burden she carried was laid at the cross. This act was physical and spiritual, deeply emblematic of her laying down her struggles, doubts, and fears before God. She described the sensation as a weight being lifted from her shoulders, a profound relief that transcended the mere physicality of her actions. It was a moment of absolute surrender when she entrusted every aspect of her life and ministry to God.

The culmination of these events brought Justina to a state of peace that was both unexpected and profound. On the morning of her ordination, everything fell into place despite the anticipation and the myriad of issues that had arisen — technical difficulties with the church organ, challenges with printing the bulletins, and even minor mishaps with printed materials. Solutions emerged as swiftly as the problems had, each resolved issue serving as a testament to God’s presence and providence. This divine orchestration brought an overwhelming sense of peace to Justina, a peace that, as she described, “surpasses all understanding.” Akin to the peace she experienced in Wittenberg, Germany when she decided to enroll in seminary.

This peace was the absence of turmoil and a deep, encompassing presence that filled her heart and mind, affirming that everything would work out as intended. Even when things did not go according to plan, Justina found solace in believing it was all part of a greater design, a divine assurance that she was exactly where she needed to be. The day of her ordination, thus, transformed her from a time of anxiety and overwhelming responsibility to one of celebration, unity, and divine peace.

Surrounded by her family, friends, and congregation, Justina relished the tangible manifestation of God’s promise of peace. On Reformation Sunday, October 29, 2023, Justina was ordained by the Rev. William “Bill” Gohl, Bishop of the Delaware-Maryland Synod. (She previously served as the Administrative Assistant to Bishop Gohl) The theme ‘To God be the Glory’ was befitting for the occasion and a testament of what God has done. The service was filled with uplifting music by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Choir. Justina’s beloved song, Ava Maria, was sung by her daughters and nephew who are members of the Johns Hopkins Peabody Children’s Choir.

In his sermon, Bishop Gohl described Justina as a ‘daughter of the Reformation,’ recalling “the process, the journey that has led to this day, the communities that shaped and formed and supported her. Now God has called her into a new season, the second part of her story – former things are passing, new things I declare to you.” (Isaiah 42:9) Justina also received a Reformation stole gifted by her parents and a chasuble made by her mother.

Justina reflected on God’s providence, and how everything came full circle for her. In Germany, she made the decision to enter the seminary. After graduation, she traveled to Germany, stood at the doors where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses, and worshiped in Castle Church, where she offered prayers of thanksgiving for what God had accomplished in her life. Pastor Justina Knuckles Sergeon’s ordination story is a testament to the journey of faith, the act of surrender, and the peace that comes from trusting in God’s divine plan.

Eric John Nzeribe is the Publisher of FunTimes Magazine and has a demonstrated history of working in the publishing industry since 1992. Whether in the remotest villages or the big cities, every ethnic nationality finds kinship in the dialects, slang, and vernacular associated with their mother tongue.

Among Black communities, the uniqueness of language is deeply interwoven into the fabric of their society. Dialects, slang, and vernacular are ways they express both spoken and unspoken contexts and experiences.

Arguably, the language of the Black communities especially in the diaspora can be said to have originated from Africa as a result of the transatlantic slave trade. Over time, as many of these communities have acclimated over generations, these linguistic traditions have evolved for the diaspora communities but remained the same for the African communities where they originated.

Dialects, slang, and vernacular such as Patois, Pidgin, African American Vernacular English (AAVE), and Afrikaans among so many others have become interwoven with the various societies that it has found expression in their literature, music, film, television, and also on the digital space.

Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and other social platforms have become tools that several Black communities have leveraged to express their linguistic traditions, engage in shared experiences, and propagate the cultures that are unique to their communities.

Spaces, memes, hashtags, podcasts, online forums, and challenges have been used regularly to educate, inform, and deepen the spread of the dialects, slang, and vernacular of many Black communities to a global audience.

Read also:

International Mother Tongue Day: African American English

Today we celebrate International Mother Tongue Day. This international holiday was established to celebrate and foster multilingualism for inclusion in education and society. Read More »

Online communities and groups not bound by location now exist to propagate these linguistic traditions, provide authentic representation, challenge and correct misinformation, and provide opportunities for a wholesome experience through cultural exchange.

While these digital platforms offer considerable leverage, they also present a challenge in the way information can be structured whittling down the import behind the context and experiences being expressed in Black languages.

Having to operate within the rules guiding this social media community can be restrictive which might not provide for more engagement and in some cases misrepresentation of the dialects, slang, and vernacular of the Black community.

Another challenge faced is the disconnect experienced by those who are uninitiated in the linguistic traditions of the language of the Black community. As a result of the many prejudices faced by Black communities, and the misinformation that is commonly portrayed by mainstream media, a lot of stereotypes and stigmatization exist in the digital space that casts these Black languages as undeveloped and mundane.

Ensuring the survival of Black languages in this digital age requires continued investment in media especially in the digital space where it is easier to present the narratives in ways that are not restricted by the rules of the conventional mainstream media.

Another way of keeping the tradition alive in this digital age is to continue to increase the social media presence through programs and curricula that adequately provide proper context and information to a global audience.

The richness and uniqueness of the language of the Black community will always remain an instrument of identification and affirmation and the digital space offers a veritable platform through which these linguistic traditions would not only be told but would be accessible to future generations.

Read also:
